They Don't Know About the Economy

Text on the meme

they don't even know about the current state of the economy

What it means

A small dark-colored kitten scurries across a floor, then a white kitten wriggles and rolls beneath a table before the clip returns to the first kitten. The caption jokingly frames the kittens’ chaotic, carefree movement as the current state of the economy, implying that ordinary people are struggling while outsiders do not understand what is happening. Lamp’s wistful Japanese city-pop/indie-pop song “Kimi Ga Nakunara” makes the absurd scene feel oddly dramatic and melancholic, heightening the joke through contrast.
