What it means

A series of close-up clips shows porcupines being handled, grooming, and raising their quills in an enclosure and outdoors. The narration explains that relaxed quills lie flat, raised quills deter predators, and backward-facing barbs make them difficult to remove. It also clarifies that quills are modified hairs made of keratin and grow back over time.

Speech

Don't porcupines get pricked when they scratch themselves? When a porcupine is relaxed, many of its quills can lie relatively flat against its body, making it possible for the animal to groom and scratch itself without constantly poking its own skin. But those quills are much more useful when danger shows up. When threatened, a porcupine can raise its quills, making its body look dramatically larger and turning what looks like a harmless rodent into a very difficult animal to attack. And the quills aren't actually poisonous. They're modified hairs made mostly of keratin, the same tough protein found in your hair and fingernails, but they have another feature that makes them especially effective. The tips of many porcupine quills have tiny backward-facing barbs. So when a predator gets too close and makes contact, the quills can become embedded in its skin and are much harder to pull back out. Porcupines can lose quills when they're pulled out or make contact with something, but they don't simply run out of them. Their quills grow back over time, just like other specialized hairs.
