Today Is Cat Day in Japan

Today is Cat Day in Japan, because 22/2 = nyan nyan nyan, the sound of a meowing cat. It’s tempting to think of cute icons such as Hello Kitty or famous stationmaster cats, but Japan is also home to some of the rarest and most elusive wild cats on Earth. They survive on small islands: the Tsushima Leopard Cat (ツシマヤマネコ, Tsushima yamaneko, Prionailurus bengalensis euptilura) and the Iriomote Cat (イリオモテヤマネコ, Iriomote yamaneko, Prionailurus bengalensis iriomotensis). Both are critically endangered, and both are strictly protected. Their story is quiet and fragile: one of shrinking habitats and careful conservation. B - 1 The sign asking motorists to watch out for Iriomote Cats dashing across the road is from Wikipedia. The photo of the Tsushima Leopard Cat was taken by Tama at the Kyoto City Zoo, part of a conservation breeding program. Read more about the cats on the websites of the Iriomote Wildlife Conservation Center and the Tsushima Wildlife Conservation Center.
