Creating a magazine cover for... A creator documents the process of designing Cosmopolitan’s first AI-generated magazine cover, beginning with a video call and many rough astronaut images. She repeatedly refines the prompt until producing a dramatic low-angle female astronaut walking confidently across a purple Mars landscape. The humor comes from the contrast between the lengthy creative process described and the final claim that the cover took only 20 seconds to make.
I got asked to help make a magazine cover for Cosmo Magazine. The Cosmo. But this one would be different than every other cover before it, because this one would be their first magazine cover generated by artificial intelligence. What would it look like? I started off by getting on a call with a Cosmo team to discuss the creative direction of the cover. We wanted to represent a powerful woman and we decided on an astronaut. Then I got to work and I used Dah-lee to generate options. Thousands of options. but none of them felt quite right. This one, for example, was too boxy. Can't really tell she's a woman. Okay, that's better, but let's get her walking towards us. Okay, better, but I don't love her pose. Can we get her looking more confident? Each time I adjusted my prompt over and over again, we're finding it to try to get the right image. And after many, many hours of trying hundreds of I finally figured out the right one. It was. A wide-angle shot from below of a female astronaut with an athletic feminine body walking with swagger towards camera on Mars in an infinite universe, comma, synthwave digital art. And drumroll, here's how it turned out.
