Stag Beetle Bondage Explained
Beetle-DSM! Beetle bondage is quite funny to look at, but the goal of the “bondage” isn’t to protect humans or annoy the poor stag beetle; rather, it’s to protect the female stag beetles from males during mating. You see, male stag beetles sometimes get funny ideas in their heads after mating and decide they want to chop the female in half with their giant mandibles, and that’s not very helpful when you want to get another generation of these cool beetles. So the naughty males get their mandibles tied before mating so that they can’t hurt the females. The bondage on the males are removed when the male is removed from the female enclosure, and doesn’t cause any permanent harm to the male beetle.
A large male stag beetle rests on a person’s hand with its mandibles restrained by a small plastic tie. The post humorously calls this “beetle bondage,” but explains that the restraint protects the female beetle from being injured during mating. It is used as an absurd educational reaction to surprising animal behavior.
