The Five Crash Axe Uses
14 CFR § 121.309(e) requires quote "Each airplane accommodating more than 19 passengers must be equipped with a crash axe." There have been 5 recorded uses of them in the last 40 years. 2 to facilitate an actual evacuation, 1 to pop a emergency slide that somehow deployed in the cabin, 1 to rescue a passenger stuck in a lavatory, and the last was when the captain of Germanwings 9525 attempted to retake the cockpit of his hijacked aircraft but was unsuccessful.
The image presents an aviation regulation requiring passenger airplanes to carry a crash axe, followed by the five recorded ways these axes were used. The dark punchline is that the final use involved the captain of Germanwings Flight 9525 unsuccessfully trying to retake the cockpit of a hijacked aircraft, making this a grim aviation fact meme.
