John Carmack on Python Scalability
My formative memory of Python was when the Quake Live team used it for the back end work, and we wound up having serious performance problems with a few million users. My bias is that a lot (not all!) of complex “scalable” systems can be done with a simple, single C++ server.
John Carmack describes how the Quake Live team used Python for backend work and encountered serious performance problems with millions of users. The joke is a programming-language debate: his experience biased him toward believing that many complex scalable systems can instead be handled by a simple single C++ server, humorously contrasting Python with C++ and large-scale performance concerns.
