Senior Programmer Zen Estimates

The day came when the senior programmer was to pass out estimates to the team. He gave to the product manager an estimate of 2 weeks. He gave to the team lead an estimate of 1 month. He gave to the project manager an estimate of 4 days. When the team met later, they revealed their estimates to each other. Outraged, the team came before the senior programmer and asked “How have you given us all different estimates?”. The senior programmer then said to them “My master passed this zen to me: the estimates are all the same” The team heard and was enlightened.

A senior programmer gives different time estimates to the product manager, team lead, and project manager. When the team confronts him, he responds with absurd programmer wisdom that all estimates are the same, leaving them “enlightened.” The joke is used as a reaction to inconsistent deadlines, project estimates, or confusing management logic.
