Vanilla Ice Cream Made from Plastic
This vanilla ice cream is the world's first food made from plastic waste. The process harnesses the power of bacteria and enzymes to behave as eco-friendly factories to digest the plastic and turn it into vanillin, the molecule that gives vanilla its flavour. Despite its appearance, the ice cream is still a research project, and not currently for human consumption.
A surreal news-style clip presents a rough-looking vanilla ice cream supposedly made from plastic waste, then cuts to the grim, deadpan face of a bearded man while explaining the bacterial process. The punchline is the contrast between an unappetizing, possibly dangerous-looking product and the soothing, wistful music: The Mamas & The Papas' “California Dreamin'.” It works as a reaction to questionable food, eco-inventions, or anything that looks horrifying but is presented as progress.
