Sentient Ship of Theseus Thomas
"what if the ship of theseus was sentient" is not a question I was prepared to grapple with on a monday Thomas didn’t enjoy his time at the Works. “It’s nice to feel mended again,” he said afterwards, “but they took so many of my old parts away and put new ones in, that I’m not sure whether I’m really me or another engine.”
A screenshot shows Thomas the Tank Engine looking startled while a mechanic replaces parts of him at the Works. The joke applies the Ship of Theseus thought experiment to Thomas: after so many parts are replaced, he wonders whether he is still himself or a different engine. It is used as an absurd philosophical reaction to identity changes, repairs, or existential confusion.
