Defeating the Dragon Is Hard
a bit of wisdom from the first Polish encyclopedia (published 1745) Draco Helveticus bipes et alatus Illustration of a dragon from Nowe Ateny. Commentary from Nowe Ateny: "Defeating the dragon is hard, but you have to try."
An old encyclopedia illustration shows a bizarre winged dragon with a long body, legs, horns, and a curled tail. The joke comes from presenting a fanciful monster drawing as serious historical wisdom, ending with the overly obvious motivational advice that defeating a dragon is difficult but still worth attempting. It is used as an absurd reaction to fake profundity or unnecessarily obvious advice.
