Warm Water Port Betrayal
The image is of an iconic scene in Inglourious Basterds (2009) in which a British officer undercover in WW2-era Germany gives himself away by signaling the number “three” with the index, middle, and ring fingers instead of the German way of using the thumb, index, and middle finger. The quoted tweet is of a self-proclaimed "Native Texian" arguing for Texas to secede from the United States. He points out that Texas could be a world superpower for, among other reasons, possession of a "warm water port". By saying this, he gives himself away as a Russian. Warm water ports have always been a particularly strong geopolitical concern of Russia, being a major motivation of several expansionary wars in her history, as most of her ports freeze over in the winter. Meanwhile Texans, like most of the rest of the world, already have a word for “warm water port”, and that word is just “port”.
This image is a screenshot of an explanatory post about a scene from Inglourious Basterds and a quoted argument for Texas secession. The joke is that calling a port a “warm water port” reveals the speaker as Russian, because Russia’s geopolitical history is strongly associated with the need for ice-free ports. It is used as a reaction to someone exposing themselves through oddly foreign wording or revealing an unexpected identity.
