The Database Design Rabbit Hole
POV: you're about to find out why senior devs spend weeks/months on database design. Today I wrote 1000+ lines of code using @prisma. And literally it takes only 3hr to design the database. Now I am exhausted and I think I deserve some goodies hackathonCreated hackathonParticipated application teams You, 1 minute ago | 1 author (You) model Applications { id String status applicationStatus User User? userId String? } enum applicationStatus { ONGOING SELECTED REJECTED } You, 1 minute ago | 1 author (You) model Hackathons { id title String tagLine String logo String banner
A screenshot shows a social media post joking that database design would take only three hours, followed by a huge, complicated Prisma schema on a code editor. The punchline is that even a seemingly simple database quickly expands into many models, fields, enums and relationships, exhausting the developer. People send this as a relatable reaction to overengineering, schema complexity and the hidden cost of database design.
