New Method to Solve Equations
Crazy stuff is happening on reddit r/learnmath 26 days ago KING-NULL Join I "found" a new method to solve equations. Has it already been discovered before? I'm gonna try to explain how it works, I apologize if the explanation is too convoluted or hard to understand. Imagine you have an equation and you're trying to find x. Both sides of the equation can be represented as functions with respect to x. Thus the equation can be represented as f(x)=g(x). We can rearrange this to 0=f(x)-g(x). If we define a new function h(x)=f(x)-g(x), then the original equation can be represented as 0=h(x). Thus finding x is equal to finding the roots of h(x).
A Reddit screenshot shows a user presenting the basic algebraic method of moving both sides of an equation together and finding the roots of a new function as if it were a newly discovered mathematical breakthrough. The joke is that the supposedly original method is elementary and obvious, making the post funny as an example of someone confidently reinventing basic math. objects
