Down 10%, Up 10%
If something goes down 10% and then up 10% are you back where you started? No because the decrease is from a bigger number. E.g., 100 - 10 =90 + 9 = 99 Huh? Down 10% then up 10% then why is your E.g., not 100-10=90+10=100? Where’d the 9 come from?
A screenshot of a Twitter/X exchange shows Andrew Yang explaining that a 10% decrease followed by a 10% increase does not return a number to its starting value, using 100 - 10 = 90 + 9 = 99. Another user humorously questions where the 9 came from, treating the percentage change as if it should add back the original 10. It is used as a reaction to basic math confusion or confidently misunderstanding percentages.
