Debt Dies With the Borrower
Death This is not something that most people would choose as a solution to their debt burden. Still, if you’re a young adult wondering about the federal PLUS loans your relatives took out to pay for your education, you may be wondering whether the debt dies with the person or people who take it on. It does. The federal government will not make a claim on their estate, and you will not inherit the balance. Ron Lieber has been the Your Money columnist since 2008 and has written five books, most recently “The Price You Pay for College.” @ronlieber · Facebook
A screenshot of a newspaper-style financial advice article titled “Death.” It explains that federal PLUS loan debt taken out by relatives for a student’s education dies with the borrower and is not inherited. The dark joke is treating death as a practical solution to a debt burden, matching the uploader’s sarcastic reaction about LTG writing for The New York Times.
