New Imperial Data Units
wake up babe, new imperial units just dropped Table of data size equivalent units Unit Abbr. or symbols Relative to previous Disks Bytes Notes bit 1/30 000 000 0.125 card cd 960 bit 1/31 250 120 Data capacity of the IBM 12-row/80-column punched card. tape tp 1920 cd 192⅔/125 230 400 Data capacity of the UNISERVO magnetic tape drive. disk dk 16 5/192 tp 1 3 750 000 Data capacity of the IBM 350 disk storage unit.
The meme presents a mock announcement that “new imperial units” have dropped, followed by a dense historical table defining bit, card, tape, and disk storage units. The joke is that obsolete data-storage measurements are treated like an exciting new measurement system, parodying announcements about bizarre imperial units and technical standards.
