A NEW DECADE IS COMING UP. YEAH, BIG DEAL! HMPH. WHERE ARE THE FLYING CARS? WHERE ARE THE MOON COLONIES? WHERE ARE THE PERSONAL ROBOTS AND THE ZERO GRAVITY BOOTS, HUH? YOU CALL THIS A NEW DECADE?! YOU CALL THIS THE FUTURE?? HA! WHERE ARE THE ROCKET PACKS? WHERE ARE THE DISINTEGRATION RAYS? WHERE ARE THE FLOATING CITIES? FRANKLY, I'M NOT SURE PEOPLE HAVE THE BRAINS TO MANAGE THE TECHNOLOGY THEY'VE GOT. I MEAN- LOOK AT THIS! WE STILL HAVE WEATHER?! GIVE ME A BREAK!
Calvin and Hobbes stand outside in the snow while Calvin angrily complains that the new decade has failed to deliver futuristic technology such as flying cars, moon colonies, and rocket packs. Hobbes points out that people may not be intelligent enough to manage the technology they already have, while Calvin sarcastically complains that weather still exists. The comic is used as a reaction to disappointment with the future or with slow technological progress.
