The Rise and Fall of Gay
US Newborn Babies Named: Gay Created by: The Beauty of Data Unit: number of US babies named: Gay Gay 'Gay' became commonly used in the LGBTQ+ community SOURCE: Social Security Administration Software: statista.com
An animated line chart tracks the number of US newborn babies named “Gay” from 1900 to 2023. The graph rises sharply during the mid-20th century, then collapses after “gay” became commonly used in the LGBTQ+ community, turning a demographic trend into a darkly absurd visual punchline. Joachim Pastor — “Taïga (N'to Remix)” plays underneath with atmospheric melodic techno/electronic music, making the graph’s dramatic rise and fall feel cinematic and unexpectedly funny.
