Laid Off Twice After Relocating
Laid off twice in 6 months after relocating. I can't take it anymore. I'm a C++ developer in scientific computing and a graphics. I have 5 years of experience only and unfortunately 2 of that was more in backend and I absolutely want to remain in scientific computing (processing sensors, robotics etc) or enter computer graphics. I got laid off from a large well known company last year (not FAANG but has loads of ex FAANG employees and comparable talent). I was devasted as it was my dream job. I then moved to Europe for a company that wanted my experience but has laid me off right after I solved a problem they were facing. They didn't even pay relocation even though they verbally said they would and I shipped all my furniture here based on that. I have right to work here so I don't have to go back but I feel tricked as I am renting in a HCOL city and my lease isn't breakable. I can't do anything and they didn't give me a dime of severance. I don't see any hope. I have some interviews but they are FAANG and I don't have the motivation anymore. I'm not even sure they'll happen as they were just recruiter screens from FAANG. I've applied to tonnes of smaller companies and just got rejections and no interviews so far. I'm actually borderline suicidal sometimes, i live alone and i don't have a partner so no fallback income. Looking at all the January layoff news make me feel like there can't possibly be jobs for all of us. I have a CS bachelors and a masters on control systems and robotics from to 30 schools and I still feel screwed. I don't want to bother with having to work other types of jobs if i cant do what i love. And i was thriving before the first layoff and i loved working there, everyone was really passionate and enthusiastic and it was true r&d work before the layoffs.
