Mentorship Is a Lie
This might be an unpopular opinion, but for me, mentorship is a lie. Not one successful person I know has had a mentor. Most of the time, experiences are overhyped and fabricated. What successful people do have, are guides. - A mentor generalises - A guide gets into the specifics - A mentor provides generalised advice - A guide provides personalised support - A mentor talks about potential mistakes - A guide shows you how to overcome obstacles - A mentor speculates the steps you need to take - A guide goes beyond & ensures you stay on the right track Mentors are overrated. People who succeed, leaders who last, have guides, not mentors. #Growth #BusinessLessons #Leadership
A LinkedIn-style post argues that mentors are overrated and contrasts them with supposedly more useful guides. The joke is the exaggerated distinction between “generalised” mentors and personalised guides, presented as a serious business lesson. It works as a reaction to overly polished professional advice and corporate thought-leadership posts.
